Jubilee of the Eastern Churches, Divine Liturgy in the Byzantine Rite
The Patriarch of the Melkite Greek Catholic Church, Joseph Absi, presided over the Divine Liturgy in St. Peter's Basilica according to the Constantinopolitan tradition. Cardinal Gugerotti: the Church is one because it is diverse, not because it is uniform.
Five Eastern traditions, seven rites, and 24 Churches sui iuris that are in full communion with the Pope and the Church of Rome while maintaining their own liturgical, theological, spiritual, and canonical traditions. This is the diverse panorama of the Eastern Churches that have brought the rich treasure of their rites to Rome for their Jubilee, celebrated in the papal basilicas in the presence of their respective heads of Churches. Among them is the Byzantine rite, which is at the center of this afternoon's celebration, May 14, in St. Peter's Basilica, with the Divine Liturgy presided over by the Patriarch of the Melkite Greek Catholic Church, Joseph Absi, and concelebrated with other heads of Churches.
