Flannery O'Connor described Southern Protestantism as a "do-it-yourself religion, and Frank Wright argues that the same mentality has now infected the Catholic Church. Drawing on O'Connor's comments about Wise Blood, he contends that abandoning authoritative doctrine leaves people without a reliable means of correcting religious error. When everyone becomes their own pope, no one can be corrected.
Wright applies this critique to Pope Leo XIV's September 25 speech in Paris, arguing that the pope's treatment of liberty, equality, fraternity, and religious freedom conflicts with traditional Catholic teaching. He directs viewers to Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò's September 28 LifeSiteNews article, which contrasts Leo's remarks with the teaching of Gregory XVI, Pius IX, Leo XIII, Pius XI, and St. Pius X. Viganò's critique is stark: the revolutionary principles are "equality without hierarchy, freedom without truth, fraternity without God the Father."
Wright urges Catholics to look to the traditional Magisterium rather than constructing what he characterizes as a new, humanist version of Christianity. O'Connor saw it coming. The "do it yourself religion" has arrived in Rome. The question is whether Catholics will return to the faith that can correct them, or continue building a religion of their own making.
