On September 10th, the Church commemorates St. Barabas of Dalmatia, a hermit and martyr remembered as the guardian of the Blood of Christ.

According to tradition, a righteous man named Jacob, present at the crucifixion, collected the precious blood and water from Christ’s side in a vessel. This vessel later passed into the care of St. Barabas, who became known for the miracles and healings that flowed from its contents.

His story, preserved in the Menologion of Basil II (10th century) and referenced in the Acta Sanctorum, speaks of his martyrdom at the hands of those who sought the holy vessel for mercenary purposes. Yet, the vessel remained hidden, and the faith of St. Barabas endured.

Later accounts, including those of St. Nicodemos the Hagiorite, connect this vessel not with the literal blood of Christ, but with the miraculous blood that flowed from an icon of Christ in Beirut. This miracle, attributed to St. Athanasios the Great and remembered in both Eastern and Western traditions, remains a profound witness to the mystery of Christ’s sacrifice.
