St. Carthagh of Lismore, also known as St. Mochuda, was one of the great monastic saints of Ireland. A native of Munster, he founded the famous monastery of Rathin in Westmeath and later established the holy city of Lismore after being driven into exile by King Blathmak.

Renowned for his holiness, asceticism, and spiritual direction, St. Carthagh guided over 860 monks in a life of prayer, penance, labor, and Christian perfection. His strict monastic rule became one of the great influences in Irish monasticism and was later incorporated into the Rule of the Canons Regular of St. Augustine.

After leaving Rathin, St. Carthagh founded the monastery and episcopal see of Lismore, which became one of the most celebrated spiritual centers in medieval Ireland. Holy men traveled there from Ireland and Britain seeking sanctity and union with Christ. The city became known for its holiness, miracles, monasteries, and devotion to God.
