St. Rostislav, Prince of Great Moravia and Equal to the Apostles, is commemorated on May 11th in the Orthodox Church. In this video, we explore the incredible life of the holy prince who transformed Great Moravia through the spread of Christianity and opened the door for Saints Cyril and Methodius to evangelize the Slavic peoples in their own language.

After becoming prince in 846, St. Rostislav recognized that the Gospel must be preached in the language of the people for true conversion to flourish. Rejecting foreign political domination through German missionaries tied to East Francia, he sought missionaries who could preach in the Slavic tongue.

When Pope Nicholas I refused his request, Rostislav turned to Byzantine Emperor Michael III. Through the wisdom of Patriarch Photios, Saints Cyril and Methodius were sent to Great Moravia. They translated the Scriptures, the Divine Liturgy, and sacred texts into Slavonic, laying the foundation for Slavic Christian civilization.

Christianity rapidly spread throughout Great Moravia with the support of Prince Rostislav. Yet his earthly life ended in betrayal. In 870, his nephew Svatopluk handed him over to Carloman, son of Louis the German. St. Rostislav was blinded and imprisoned in Bavaria, where he reposed in the Lord that same year.

His legacy lives on as one of the great defenders of Orthodox Christian evangelization and Slavic Christian identity.
