Is Archbishop Viganò Right? Is Rome in Schism?
Recently, the excommunicated Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò has made a striking claim: that it is not the Society of Saint Pius X (SSPX) that stands in schism, but rather that Rome itself — the authorities in Vatican City — have broken from the Catholic faith.
It’s a dramatic charge. But is he right?
Viganò argues that recent popes, especially Pope Francis, have embraced doctrinal positions incompatible with prior magisterial teaching — particularly in areas such as ecumenism, religious liberty, collegiality, and moral theology. According to him, these developments amount not merely to pastoral changes, but to a substantive rupture with Catholic Tradition. From this premise, he concludes that fidelity to the perennial magisterium may require resisting — even rejecting — the present Roman authorities.
That is a serious accusation. And serious accusations deserve serious analysis.
In this video, I examine:
• What Viganò’s actual arguments are (not caricatures of them)
• Whether his claims about doctrinal rupture are theologically coherent
• Whether his position is internally consistent
• And most importantly, whether his conclusion — that “Rome is in schism” — holds up under Catholic ecclesiology
