Byzantine Saints: Hieromartyr Therapon, Bishop of Cyprus (25 May)

Hieromartyr Therapon, Bishop of Cyprus, is commemorated by the Orthodox Church on May 25th. St. Therapon lived a life of deep asceticism in a monastery before becoming bishop on the island of Cyprus. During the brutal persecution of Christians under Emperor Diocletian (284–305), St. Therapon courageously confessed Christ and suffered martyrdom for the Faith.
After his repose, the relics of the holy Hieromartyr became a source of miraculous healings and abundant grace. When danger from Saracen invasions threatened Cyprus, his relics were transferred to Constantinople in the year 806. During the sea voyage, myrrh flowed from the saint’s relics, and through the prayers of St. Therapon, those aboard the ship were miraculously saved from a violent storm.
Upon arriving in Constantinople, the relics were first placed in a church dedicated to the Mother of God “Eleousa” — the Merciful. Later, on November 12th, the relics were transferred again into a church dedicated specifically to St. Therapon. Countless miracles continued to occur through his intercessions: the gravely ill were healed, and even the dying were restored to life.
