📖 Saint Amador the Hermit | August 20 | Butler’s Lives of the Saints

On August 20th, the Church remembers Saint Amador, the hermit of Quercy, venerated as the founder of the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Rocamadour. Though history leaves us with little certainty about his life, his legend has inspired devotion for centuries.

According to tradition, St. Amador was once a servant of Mary and Joseph, later marrying Saint Veronica. Fleeing persecution, they traveled to Gaul, where Amador helped spread the Gospel. After Veronica’s death, he lived in solitude, building a chapel that became the renowned shrine of Rocamadour. Later traditions even identified him with Zacchaeus from the Gospel of Luke.

✨ The discovery of his incorrupt body in 1166 fueled devotion and gave rise to the popular French saying: “In flesh and blood like Saint Amador.”
