Today we remember St. Hermes, an ancient martyr of Rome whose veneration can be traced back to the earliest centuries of Christianity.

Although later accounts of his martyrdom contain legendary material, the historical evidence for St. Hermes himself and his ancient cult is strong. His name appears in early Christian martyrologies and pilgrim itineraries, showing that Christians were venerating him in Rome from antiquity.

St. Hermes was buried in the cemetery of Basilla on the Via Salaria, where the remains of a large basilica were later discovered above his tomb. Among the ruins was also found a fragmentary inscription bearing the martyr’s name and attributed to Pope St. Damasus.

The transcript also recounts the later translation of relics attributed to St. Hermes to Flanders, where devotion to the martyr helped spread his cult throughout Western Europe.

His story offers a fascinating glimpse into how historians distinguish between an authentic ancient martyr and the legendary stories that sometimes developed around the saints centuries later.
