In today's insightful Homily, Father Bob Connors explores the challenging but necessary reality of divine discipline. Reflecting on King David’s census and the subsequent plague, Father Connors reminds us that God’s corrections are born from a heart of a "tender Father" who desires our ultimate holiness. We are encouraged to receive the "word of God" not as a burden, but as a "heavenly care" that strengthens us to do what must be done. Even when we face the "rejection" or lack of faith seen in Jesus' hometown, we are called to remain constant in our love for God above all things.
The Scriptures highlight the weight of leadership and the mystery of faith:
-The First Reading (2 Samuel 24:2, 9-17): King David directs a census of Israel and Judah, an act of pride that leads to immediate regret. Given a choice of punishments by the prophet Gad, David throws himself into the hands of the Lord, saying, "Let us fall into the hands of God, for his mercy is great". David’s plea for his people—"It is I who have sinned... but these sheep, what have they done?"—reveals the heart of a true, though flawed, shepherd.
-The Responsorial Psalm (Ps 32): A celebration of reconciliation: "Lord, forgive the guilt of my sin".
-The Holy Gospel (Mark 6:1-6): Jesus returns to His native place, Nazareth, and begins to teach in the synagogue. The locals are astonished but quickly become dismissive, asking, "Is he not the carpenter, the son of Mary?". Jesus remarks that a prophet is not without honor except in his native place, and He is amazed at their lack of faith.
Let us pray that these Sacred Mysteries may restore us to holiness and obtain for us the pardon we seek from our merciful God.
