The SSPX excommunication controversy has raised serious questions about Catholic tradition, obedience, Church authority, the Traditional Latin Mass, and the relationship between Rome and the Society of Saint Pius X. Is SSPX simply defending Catholic tradition, or does this controversy reveal a deeper temptation toward separation, purity-testing, and a modern form of Donatism?
This is the first episode of Roxie Unfiltered - a live Catholic commentary series where I work through current Church debates, Catholic apologetics, theology, Church history, and the ideas behind future video essays.
In this live discussion, I’ll look at the SSPX controversy through the lens of Catholic authority and Church history, especially the ancient Donatist controversy. Donatism raised serious questions about purity, communion, sacramental validity, and whether the true Church could be identified only with the “pure” or uncompromised faithful.
As someone who attends the Traditional Latin Mass and loves Catholic tradition, reverent liturgy, Gregorian chant, Latin, sacred worship, and the beauty of the Church’s inheritance, I want to think carefully about where tradition ends and reactionary traditionalism begins.
We’ll discuss:
This is not the final polished breakdown. I’m currently working on a longer video essay that will look at the SSPX question more like a debate: what Rome says, what SSPX says, what the facts are, and how Catholics should think through the claims.
Join the live conversation, share your thoughts in the chat, and let me know what questions you think need to be addressed in the full video.
