Joined by Brendan Thompson of Word on Fire UK, Fr Lawrence explores how Catholic churches are more than historic buildings or tourist attractions, they are places of prayer, pilgrimage, worship and encounter with Jesus Christ. Through the beauty of sacred art, stained glass, statues, symbols and the Eucharist, churches point beyond themselves to the reality of heaven.
They go on to explore the symbolism found within Catholic churches, including the saints surrounding the tabernacle, the meaning of the Lamb of God, the symbolism of gardens in Christian tradition and how church architecture reflects the story of salvation. They also reflect on the inspiration of Saint Peter’s Basilica, the Holy Sepulchre and Gaudí’s Sagrada Familia, one of the most remarkable examples of sacred architecture in the modern world.
Churches are not merely buildings. They are signs of God's presence among us and reminders that we are made for heaven. Their beauty awakens a longing for eternal life and points us toward our final home with God.
About the Way of Beauty
The Way of Beauty is one of the most powerful paths to God in the Catholic tradition. Known as the via pulchritudinis, the Way of Beauty, it teaches that beauty, like truth and goodness, can lead the human heart toward Jesus Christ.
Beauty is not merely a matter of personal taste. Beauty reflects the glory of God and reveals something of His presence in creation. From the beauty of nature and sacred music to the grandeur of Catholic churches, cathedrals, sacred art and the liturgy, beauty has the power to awaken wonder, inspire prayer and draw souls closer to God.
Throughout the history of the Catholic Church, beauty has played a central role in evangelization. The great cathedrals of Europe, the masterpieces of Christian art, Gregorian chant, sacred architecture, and the lives of the saints have all pointed beyond themselves to the beauty of Christ. Many converts to Catholicism have spoken of encountering God through beauty before they fully understood Catholic theology or doctrine.
About the St Dominic's Priory, The Rosary Shrine
Located in northwest London near Hampstead Heath, this magnificent Dominican church, formally known as the Church of Our Lady of the Rosary and St Dominic, has served as a centre of prayer, preaching, sacred beauty and devotion since the 19th century.
Built in 1883 and entrusted to the Dominican Friars, St Dominic’s Priory is renowned around the world as London’s Rosary Shrine and was officially designated a diocesan Shrine of the Holy Rosary by Cardinal Vincent Nichols in 2016. The church is considered one of the largest Catholic churches in London and is famous for its breathtaking Neo-Gothic architecture, richly decorated chapels, sacred art, stained glass and profound connection to the Holy Rosary.
The Rosary Shrine is unique because its entire design is based on the structure of the Rosary itself. Surrounding the nave are fifteen beautifully carved chapels dedicated to the traditional Mysteries of the Rosary — the Joyful, Sorrowful, and Glorious Mysteries — creating a visual meditation on the life of Jesus Christ and the story of salvation. It is believed to be the first church in the world designed with a distinct chapel for every Mystery of the Rosary.
