On February 6, the Church commemorates St. Guarinus of Palestrina, a monk whose humility was so profound that he literally fled from being made a bishop.

Born in Bologna, St. Guarinus rejected worldly ambition from childhood, devoting himself instead to fasting, prayer, and solitude. Against his father’s wishes, he pursued the priesthood and later joined the Canons Regular of St. Augustine at Mortara, where his sanctity flourished.

When an episcopal seat became vacant, Guarinus was chosen because of his holiness—but convinced of his unworthiness, he escaped through a window and hid until another was elected. His humility, however, could not remain hidden. Pope Lucius II, himself a native of Bologna, summoned him to Rome and insisted he accept the See of Palestrina, which carried the dignity of Cardinal.

True to his spirit of poverty, St. Guarinus sold every valuable gift given to him by the Pope and distributed the proceeds to the poor, astonishing the entire city. He spent his final years immersed in prayer, and at his death, witnesses reported a brilliant supernatural light filling the sky as his soul departed peacefully.

This episode from Butler’s Lives of the Saints is a powerful witness to true humility, detachment from the world, and holiness in leadership.
