Cardinal Roche told The Tablet that the Latin Mass restrictions are here to stay — and most of Catholic media reacted like it came out of nowhere.

Matt Gaspers wasn't surprised. Not even a little.

On today's show, the managing editor of Catholic Family News walks us back to an interview Pope Leo XIV gave Crux Magazine last summer, where the Holy Father asked — about the Novus Ordo and the traditional Mass — "do we really find that much difference between this experience and that experience?" Matt's read is simple: Leo told us where he stood a year ago, and Cardinal Roche is most likely reporting him accurately.

So no, I don't think the Novus Ordo is intrinsically evil. I'm just not that kind of trad. But when a priest can choose this option or that option, Sunday after Sunday, parish after parish — you're not going to get uniformity. In the traditional Roman Missal there's one option for everything. You just do what the book says.
