On August 25, Butler’s Lives of the Saints remembers St. Ebba the Elder, virgin and abbess, sister of the Northumbrian kings St. Oswald and Oswiu.

Rather than accept a royal marriage, Ebba embraced the religious life and received the habit from St. Finan of Lindisfarne. She founded monasteries at Ebchester and Coldingham and became one of the notable religious women of early Christian Britain.

St. Cuthbert visited her monastery, and St. Etheldreda lived under her direction before later becoming abbess of Ely.

But this reading also recounts a sobering episode from St. Bede.

A monk named Adamnan received a warning that Coldingham would eventually be destroyed by fire because religious discipline had deteriorated. Cells intended for prayer and spiritual reading had become places of feasting, conversation, amusement, and worldly vanity.

When St. Ebba questioned him, he reportedly assured her that the catastrophe would not happen during her lifetime.

After her death, discipline declined still further—and the monastery was eventually destroyed by fire.

The story is a powerful reminder that religious communities, families, and even entire societies can lose their purpose when prayer, sacrifice, and fidelity are replaced by comfort and distraction.
