Episcopal lineage in the Catholic Church is the historical and sacramental record of the "unbroken chain" of laying on of hands, connecting modern bishops back to the original Apostles. Because each ordination requires at least one (and usually three) validly ordained bishops to preside, the lineage creates a vast, interconnected web of spiritual ancestry. Various prelates from history serve as the progenitor for episcopal lines that our bishops today can trace back hundreds of years. Let’s take a look at some of these lines, some that have been subsumed, and some that have gone rogue and left the church altogether.
