On February 12th, the Church commemorates Venerable Mary, called Marinus, and her father Eugene — a powerful story of humility, hidden holiness, and heroic virtue.

After the death of her mother in the early 6th century, Mary’s father Eugene chose to enter a monastery in Bithynia (Asia Minor). Unable to bear separation from her father and desiring to consecrate herself fully to Christ, Mary disguised herself in male clothing and entered monastic life under the name Brother Marinus.

Known for extraordinary humility and obedience, “Brother Marinus” lived in hidden sanctity. After her father’s death, she intensified her ascetical life and received the gift of casting out demons.

Her greatest trial came when an innkeeper’s daughter falsely accused her of fathering her illegitimate child. Rather than defend herself, Mary accepted the humiliation in silence. Expelled from the monastery, she lived in poverty outside its walls and raised the child as her own.

Only after her holy death did the monks discover the truth — that Brother Marinus was in fact a woman who had lived a life of heroic virtue. The innkeeper’s daughter publicly repented and was immediately healed of demonic possession at the saint’s tomb.

Her relics were later transferred to Constantinople and then to Venice in 1113.

This extraordinary saint teaches us:

• The power of humility
• The strength of silent endurance
• The beauty of hidden sacrifice
• Trust in God's justice over self-defense

May we learn from her example to embrace humiliation for Christ and seek sanctity in hiddenness.
