Did the apostles and Jesus teach things that were never written down? In this episode of Catholic Bible Highlights, Kenny Burchard and Catholic apologist and author Dave Armstrong explore the biblical foundation and binding authority of oral tradition and its connection to the Jewish Oral Torah.
From Paul’s insistence that Christians hold fast to what they “heard” as well as what was written, to John’s testimony that many of Jesus’ teachings were never recorded, Scripture itself affirms the importance of oral transmission of God’s Word.
Dave also connects this to the Jewish belief in an Oral Torah given to Moses at Sinai, passed on by the Pharisees, and later echoed in Jesus’ teachings on lust, prayer, and perseverance. Together, they show how oral tradition is not a Catholic “invention” but a biblical and historical reality.
