St. Anastasius the Persian, monk and martyr of the Holy Orthodox Church, is commemorated on January 22. Once a pagan soldier in the army of the Persian emperor Chosroes II, Anastasius encountered the power of the Life-Creating Cross of the Lord, which transformed his heart and led him to Christ.

Originally named Munddates, the son of a Persian sorcerer, he witnessed the capture of Jerusalem in 614 and the removal of the Holy Cross to Persia. Astonished by the miracles surrounding the Cross, the young soldier sought the truth of Christianity. After learning of Christ’s crucifixion for the salvation of mankind, he embraced the Christian faith and was baptized with the name Anastasius.

He later became a monk in Jerusalem, living an ascetic life for seven years, immersing himself in prayer and the lives of the Holy Martyrs. On Great and Holy Saturday, Anastasius received a divine vision of a radiant man offering him a golden chalice filled with wine—revealing his calling to martyrdom.

Leaving the monastery in secret, he traveled to Caesarea in Palestine, where he was arrested and tortured for confessing Christ. Despite brutal beatings, imprisonment, forced labor, and threats of death, St. Anastasius remained steadfast, declaring:

“I will never deny my Lord—neither openly nor even while asleep.”

By order of Emperor Chosroes, he was strangled and beheaded, receiving the crown of martyrdom. After the emperor’s death, the relics of St. Anastasius the Persian were transferred to Palestine, where they were glorified by the faithful.

This holy martyr’s life is a powerful witness to conversion, perseverance, and faithfulness unto death.
