On October 12, the Orthodox Church commemorates St. Cosmos the Hymnographer, also known as Cosmas of Maiuma, the Bishop of Muma, and one of the greatest hymnographers in Christian history.

Born an orphan and adopted by Sergius, the father of St. John of Damascus, St. Cosmos was educated alongside John under a learned Sicilian monk also named Cosmos. Together, they mastered philosophy, music, and theology—gaining deep wisdom that would shape the future of Byzantine hymnography.

After becoming a monk at the Lavra of St. Sabas in Jerusalem, St. Cosmos and St. John of Damascus defended the Church against iconoclasm and composed many of the most enduring hymns of Orthodox worship.

As Bishop of Maiuma, near Gaza, St. Cosmos shepherded his flock with holiness and wrote profound works of theology and poetry. He is revered as a “vessel of divine grace” and a “glory of the Church.”

The Triodes Canons of Holy Week

Hymns for Lazarus Saturday and Palm Sunday

The beloved hymn “More Honorable than the Cherubim” (part of Axion Estin)

Together with St. John of Damascus, St. Cosmos developed the Octoechos, a foundational system for Orthodox liturgical music still used today.
