A new Pew Research Center study shows that, for the first time in more than 50 years, the number of immigrants in America is declining. In January, the immigrant population stood at 53.3 million but dropped to 51.9 million by June. The study also found that in June, 15.4 percent of all U.S. residents were immigrants, down from a historic high of 15.8 percent. Additionally, 19 percent of the U.S. labor force were immigrants, down from 20 percent in January. Lora Ries, Director of the Border Security and Immigration Center at the Heritage Foundation, provides insight into the impacts of immigration policies under President Trump and former President Biden’s restrictions on asylum applicants, and discusses whether these trends may continue.
