On January 18th, according to the traditional Roman calendar, Holy Mother Church celebrates the Feast of the Chair of St. Peter at Rome — a profound reminder of apostolic authority, Church unity, and the divinely established Papacy.

This feast commemorates St. Peter’s arrival in Rome, where he established his definitive See, from which his successors would govern and guide the one, holy, Catholic, and apostolic Church. Scripture itself bears witness to Peter’s presence in Rome through his reference to “Babylon” in his First Epistle — a title long understood by the Fathers to signify Rome, the Caput Mundi, the head of the world.

The Feast of the Chair of St. Peter also inaugurates the Chair of Unity Octave, lasting until January 25th, the Feast of the Conversion of St. Paul. This octave was officially sanctioned in 1908 by Pope St. Pius X and later extended to the universal Church by Pope Benedict XV, inspired by the prayers and work of Father Paul of Graymoor.

Father Paul, originally an Episcopalian minister, sought true Christian unity through prayer, fidelity to doctrine, and submission to truth. His journey ultimately led him into the Catholic Church — a powerful example of true ecumenism, not based on compromise, but on conversion to the fullness of truth.

Drawing from Pope Pius XI’s 1929 encyclical on ecumenism, this sermon explains why authentic Christian unity can only be achieved through a return to the one true Church of Christ. The dogma Extra Ecclesiam Nulla Salus — Outside the Church there is no salvation — is presented not as a threat, but as a message of hope, mercy, and divine love.

Quoting St. Augustine, Pope Innocent III, and Sacred Tradition, this sermon reminds us that inside the Church is salvation, forgiveness, peace, and eternal life. In difficult times for the Church, the faithful are called not to abandon her, but to remain steadfast, humble, and loyal — echoing the words of St. Peter himself:

“Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.”
