For Day Two of the O Antiphons, the Catholic Church prays O Adonai – O Lord. In this video, we continue praying the ancient Advent prayers the Church has used for centuries as she prepares for the coming of Christ. Today’s antiphon draws us deep into the story of Exodus and salvation history, naming Jesus Christ as the same Lord who revealed Himself to Moses in the burning bush and led His people out of slavery.
The O Antiphons are prayed from December 17 through December 23 during Evening Prayer, right before the Magnificat. Each antiphon names Christ using a biblical title rooted in prophecy, teaching us how to wait for Him with faith, reverence, and hope.
In this reflection on O Adonai, we explore:
The meaning of Adonai in Scripture
Christ as Lord in the Old and New Testaments
The connection between the burning bush and Bethlehem
The antiphon prayer itself and how to pray it
A reflection to carry into your Advent prayer life
If you are just joining this series, be sure to watch Day One, where we unpack what the O Antiphons are, their history, and how the Church prays them.
I hope this prayer inspires you to go deeper in your prayer life this Advent and to grow closer to God.
