St. Bartolo Longo’s astonishing life proves that no sinner is beyond the mercy of Jesus Christ.

While studying law in Naples amid the anti-Catholicism and secularism of 19th-century Italy, Bartolo abandoned the Catholic faith of his childhood. He became deeply involved in occult practices and was eventually initiated as a satanic priest. Demonic oppression, nightmares, despair, and suicidal thoughts followed.

Through the intervention of a Dominican priest and a faithful Catholic professor, Bartolo returned to the Church. Yet he feared that his terrible sins could never be forgiven. In that darkness, he turned to the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Holy Rosary.

Convinced that promoting the Rosary and bringing souls back to Christ would become his mission, Bartolo devoted the remainder of his life to Our Lady. He helped restore the faith in Pompeii, constructed the great Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary, built orphanages, and established homes for the children and families of prisoners. He used his legal education to serve the poor, sick, imprisoned, and abandoned.

This sermon also applies Bartolo’s witness to the temptations faced by lawyers and every Christian: greed, pride, lust, jealousy, ambition, and the desire for worldly recognition.
