On Long Island, New York, a growing summer tradition known as “Beach Catholic” is drawing hundreds of worshippers to Sunday Masses celebrated on the sand. Now in its 11th year, the initiative is a collaboration of three parishes. Despite some concerns over casual attire like flip-flops, parishioners suggest the beach serves as a visible reminder of God’s presence in nature. The Long Island clergy and faithful say maintaining reverence at the beach services is a major consideration, and the local bishop is on board. Father Brian Barr, one of the celebrants of the “Beach Catholic” Sunday Masses, joins to discuss how it began, how many people attend, and the reaction among Catholics — or even non-Catholics — to seeing Mass on the beach.
