Leo XIV is supposed to be a Monarch: Why is he voting in the US election?

Published 3 days ago

Pope Leo XIV has reportedly requested a U.S. ballot and plans to vote in the 2026 midterm elections. John-Henry Westen argues the decision raises questions about the political neutrality expected of the Pope as the universal pastor and sovereign of Vatican City. A Pope's allegiance should extend beyond national identity and political interests; his ultimate kingdom is heaven. Historically, bishops pledged loyalty to the Pope and the Holy Roman Church rather than to their own national interests. Now the Pope is voting in an American election.

John-Henry shifts to what he considers the deeper controversy: Pope Leo XIV's relationship with Catholic tradition. He reads from historical professions made by bishops and popes, emphasizing the promise to preserve the faith, uphold Church dogma, and avoid innovations that alter established tradition. The old papal profession includes the vow: "I vow not to encroach upon, to alter, or to permit any innovation to the tradition I have found preserved by my worthy predecessors."

Leo's actions regarding Church teaching are a more serious concern than his participation in an American election. The issue is fidelity to the traditions preserved throughout the Church's history. A Pope voting in a national election is unusual. A Pope breaking with the tradition he swore to preserve is unprecedented. The question is which violation matters more, and whether anyone will hold him accountable. The answer may determine the future of the papacy itself.
