One of the most revered masterpieces in Catholic history, Michelangelo’s The Last Judgment in the Sistine Chapel, is set to undergo maintenance. The Vatican Museums' Painting Restoration Laboratory is returning to this masterpiece for extraordinary maintenance work. EWTN was granted an exclusive behind-the-scenes look into Italy’s oldest painting restoration laboratory, where the mission goes far beyond material repairs. Paolo Violini, head of the Painting and Wooden Material Restoration Laboratory, describes the work as both physical and immaterial—recovering not only the form of sacred art but also its meaning and significance. EWTN Vatican journalist Valentina Di Donato has more.
