Jesus Cleanses the Temple: Why Avarice Leads to Damnation | Tuesday of the First Week of Lent

On Tuesday of the First Week of Lent, we meditate on one of the most striking moments in the Gospel: Jesus cleansing the Temple.
After entering Jerusalem in triumph, Our Lord withdraws into the Temple — teaching us to flee from praise and vain glory. But scarcely has He entered when He drives out the merchants, declaring:
“You have made it a den of thieves.”
Why such righteous anger?
The Holy Fathers teach that it was not merely commerce that stirred His indignation — but avarice, the insatiable love of money. St. Chrysostom, St. Augustine, St. Jerome, and St. Ambrose warn that greed is unlike any other vice. It grows stronger with age, resists grace, and stands as the root of all evils.
In this powerful Lenten reflection, we explore:
Why the salvation of a miser is called “morally impossible”
How avarice differs from other sins
Why prosperity, suffering, and old age fail to cure greed
The terrifying example of Judas
How grace meets resistance in the covetous heart
The only path to conversion for the avaricious soul
This meditation is a sobering reminder that where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
Lent calls us to examine our attachment to earthly goods. Do we love God above all? Or do we cling to silver and gold?
Let us purify the temple of our own hearts.
