Did you know his former diocese of San Diego was a test case pushing the boundaries of Church teaching and practice as far as it could go, when then-Bp. McElroy not only employed, but protected and promoted a man in a gay marriage, who was given a position of leadership and authority at a parish?

Not only did this employee promote heterodox teaching on LGBT, while leading a life in total contradiction to Church teaching, he was also accused of persecuting faithful Catholics — even locking out a Rosary group from church, forcing them to pray in the parking lot!

This and other events led to an explosion of scandal that ended in the man resigning, a media firestorm, and the bishop trying to downplay his role in all this.
