For the Pontifical Swiss Guard, this is the most important day of the year. Twenty-seven new recruits from across Switzerland have taken their oath, committing themselves to protect the Pope and continue a centuries-old tradition of faith, courage, and service.
The ceremony, traditionally held on May 6 to honor the 147 guards who gave their lives during the 1527 Sack of Rome, was exceptionally held on October 4 this year following the passing of Pope Francis and the recent conclave.
These young men meet strict requirements to join the world’s smallest and oldest military corps: they must be Catholic, male, single, and between 19–30 years old, with Swiss Army training, a driver’s license, and more. Their oath marks a renewal of loyalty to the Pope and service to the Church—especially significant during the Holy Year under Pope Leo XIV.
Witness this inspiring moment as the Swiss Guard continues its centuries-old mission, safeguarding the Vatican and exemplifying devotion and discipline.
