Pope Leo XIV has named Monsignor Renzo Pegoraro as the new leader of the Pontifical Academy for Life. Previously serving as the academy’s chancellor, Monsignor Pegoraro holds a licentiate in moral theology and completed postgraduate studies in bioethics. As the pope continues to identify artificial intelligence as a major challenge for humanity, this appointment signals a deepening focus on bioethics and emerging technologies. Fr. Thomas Petri, president of the Dominican House of Studies in Washington, D.C., joins to explain what the Pontifical Academy for Life is and what this new appointment tells us about Pope Leo XIV. He shares what we know about Monsignor Renzo and what role the academy will play in the pope’s policy on AI.
