As U.S. lawmakers remain out of town, the government barrels toward a shutdown, with a funding deadline looming on Wednesday, October 1. The Trump administration has warned of mass federal worker firings if Congress fails to act in time. The White House’s Budget Office released a memo stating that programs without mandatory funding would “bear the brunt” of a shutdown, though it does exempt safety-net programs such as the military, Veterans Affairs, and law enforcement. Both sides continue to blame each other. Democrats have redlined restoring billions of dollars they say were healthcare cuts resulting from the passage of the GOP-backed One Big Beautiful Bill.
