Two Weeks with Pope Leo XIV: In Illo Uno Unum

From the teacher’s desk to the altar, from diplomatic halls to the tomb of St. Paul, Pope Leo XIV’s first full week as pontiff has been marked by spiritual depth, clarity of mission, and urgent appeals for peace. His words to the LaSallian family — “Your altar is the cathedra” — framed education as a sacred vocation. To diplomats, he warned that words too, not only weapons, can kill, urging peace built on humility and truth.

In his inaugural homily on May 18, the new pope embraced the Petrine call with humility: “I was chosen, without any merit of my own,” pledging to be a servant of your faith and your joy. His episcopal motto — In Illo Uno Unum, “In the One, we are one” — echoed throughout his ecumenical and missionary messages, particularly in his meeting with Christian leaders, where he called for full communion rooted in shared faith.
