Either we should cancel Father’s Day… or we’re misunderstanding Jesus.

One of the most common objections Catholics hear is Matthew 23:9:

“Call no man your father on earth, for you have one Father, who is in heaven.”

But if Jesus meant we can never call anyone father, then why do we celebrate Father’s Day?

Why does Scripture call Abraham our father in faith?

Why does St. Paul write, “I became your father in Christ Jesus through the Gospel” (1 Corinthians 4:15)?

The issue was never the word “father.”

Jesus was condemning pride and those who sought honor and authority apart from God.

God alone is our ultimate Father, but Scripture clearly recognizes both physical fathers and spiritual fathers.
