The Vatican’s Latest “Clarification” on Mary?
The Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith, led by Archbishop Víctor Manuel Fernández, released a document deeming Marian titles like Co-Redemptrix and Mediatrix of All Graces “inappropriate” and “not helpful.” In this week’s Coffin Report, Patrick Coffin takes a close look at the document (called a Doctrinal Note) and provides commentary on its background and implications.
But these traditional titles are not inventions—they’re centuries-old theological insights expressing Mary’s unique cooperation with her Son in salvation history.
Along with thousands of other Catholic leaders, St. Mother Teresa of Calcutta publicly supported the movement for a fifth Marian dogma, saying, “Of course Mary is Co-Redemptrix—she gave Jesus His body, and His body is what saved us.”
Archbishop Fulton Sheen wrote that Mary “stood at the foot of the Cross not as a spectator, but as a participant,” making her a true cooperator in Redemption.
Dr. Mark Miravalle, theologian and long-time advocate for Marian dogmatic clarity, has shown that “Co-Redemptrix” doesn’t diminish Christ’s role—it magnifies it by highlighting Mary’s total dependence on His grace.
The timing of this new statement, amid widespread confusion and dissent, raises eyebrows. Why redefine devotion precisely when clarity and courage are most needed?
Calling Marian titles “inappropriate” isn’t theological modesty—it’s historical amnesia and pastoral timidity disguised as progress.
The bottom line: Truth doesn’t change. Titles that honor Mary’s role in Redemption aren’t a threat—they’re a testimony.
