Franz Liszt’s Via Crucis ("The Way of the Cross") is one of the most profound and spiritual works of his late career. Composed between 1878 and 1879, this sacred choral piece leads us through the 14 Stations of the Cross — from Christ's condemnation to His burial — blending intense musical expression with deep theological reflection.

Uniquely austere and modern for its time, Via Crucis breaks away from Romantic grandeur and embraces silence, dissonance, and raw spiritual tension. Scored for choir, soloists, and organ (sometimes piano), it is a meditative journey that invites the listener to contemplate Christ's Passion with solemn devotion.

Liszt, toward the end of his life, turned increasingly toward faith and introspection. Via Crucis reflects his personal piety, his fascination with Gregorian chant and sacred traditions, and his desire to fuse music with the liturgy of Holy Week.
