The U.S. Supreme Court has upheld Tennessee’s ban on so-called gender-affirming care for minors in a 6–3 decision. Chief Justice John Roberts wrote the majority opinion, stating that the law does not violate the Constitution’s Equal Protection Clause. The ruling supports efforts by President Donald Trump and many state governments to restrict such care. In her dissent, Justice Sonia Sotomayor, joined by her liberal colleagues, argued that the decision abandons transgender children and their families to political whims. Tennessee Attorney General Jonathan Skrmetti joins to share his thoughts on whether the ruling came as a surprise and how he would respond to Justice Sotomayor’s statement.
