At the edge of Mexico City, in a landfill known as El Bordo, families live among mountains of trash — without running water, electricity, or stability — searching each day for something to recycle, something to survive on.
But for the team at Hope of the Poor, this place is not forgotten. Founded by Craig Johring, who spent years building trust with street children trapped in addiction, the mission is simple: love them, believe in them, and help them find a way out through education, work, and faith.
Today, more than 120 families have been helped, over 250 homeless people are served daily, and many former street children — once addicted and hopeless — now lead outreach themselves. As Craig says, “I think that people change when they're believed in.”
In this powerful report, we follow the mission from the landfills of Mexico to a meeting with Pope Leo XIV in Rome — and witness how the Gospel transforms lives when it is lived among the poor.
