Democrats scored major victories across the country in Tuesday’s elections, sweeping the governor races in Virginia and New Jersey, the New York City mayoral race, and a redistricting referendum in California. The large margins could be an ominous sign for Republicans in next year’s midterm elections. In New York, 34-year-old Zohran Mamdani, a Muslim Democratic socialist, won the mayoral race with 50.5% of the vote. In New Jersey, Democratic Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill defeated Republican Jack Ciattarelli, flipping two heavily Latino counties that President Trump had won in 2024. In Virginia, Abigail Spanberger secured a double-digit win for governor with 56.7%. This was a Democratic romp amid a national crisis over the now-record 36-day government shutdown. Democratic leadership says it should serve as a wake-up call. Capitol Hill Correspondent Erik Rosales reports.
