In this episode, I’m joined by Pat Neve, the mind behind the Catholic Pat Substack and author of the vital new book, Save Your Parish. Pat has a fascinating background that spans stand-up comedy, professional youth ministry, and high-level sales—a combination that gives him a unique vantage point on how we, as founders, can impact our local church communities. We dive deep into why the skills you use to build your business are exactly what your parish needs to move from a state of maintenance to a state of mission.
We explore the concept of “ownership” versus “consumption.” Most people approach their parish like a customer at a store, but as entrepreneurs, we have a natural drive to build, fix, and steward. Pat challenges us to see our wealth and influence as a “necessary burden” for the benefit of the community. If you’ve ever felt frustrated by the lack of community or leadership in your local parish, this conversation provides the blueprint for how you can step up and lead without waiting for a programmatic fix from the top down.
Core Lesson:
Transform your local church by moving from a consumer mindset to an ownership mentality.
We’ve spent a lot of time on the podcast and over at the Catholic Founders Substack talking about how our businesses are meant to be instruments of God’s will. However, there’s a real danger in compartmentalizing that “founder energy” and leaving it at the office. Too often, we walk into our parishes with the mindset of a customer, expecting the priest to provide a perfect “user experience” while we sit back and consume. Pat hits on a point that we’ve explored in previous episodes with guys like Johann Kurtz: we are responsible for the legacy we leave in our local communities. If you see a lack of fellowship or a crumbling infrastructure, that should be viewed as a call to stewardship, rather than a cue to find a better “product” down the road.
Taking ownership means recognizing that you’ve been equipped with the specific skills and resources to actually move the needle. As entrepreneurs, we have a natural tendency to create and build, and we must apply that same drive to the “garden” of our parish. This is a matter of justice—giving to the community what it is due because we are an integral part of it. When you start seeing yourself as a co-owner of the mission rather than a recipient of a service, your entire approach to the Sunday obligation shifts. You begin to look for ways to leverage your social influence and your capital to cultivate a culture where the faith can actually thrive for the next generation. We were created to create, and that creative responsibility extends directly into the pews.
God Bless & Happy Building!
