Blessed Marianus Scotus of Regensburg (9 February): Butler's Lives of the Saints

Blessed Marianus Scotus of Regensburg, commemorated on February 9, was an Irish Benedictine monk, mystic, theologian, and one of the greatest scribes of the medieval Church.
Born in Ireland under the name Muak Mac Robar, later known as Mariano Scoto, he left his homeland in 1067 with companions on pilgrimage to Rome. Though Rome was never reached, Divine Providence led him to Regensburg, where his life of prayer, penance, and sacred labor would quietly transform the Church in southern Germany.
Blessed Marianus devoted himself entirely to the copying of Sacred Scripture, including the Old and New Testaments with commentaries, treating this holy work as an act of penance and a means of sanctification. Living in severe austerity, clothed in coarse garments, and working without rest, he became renowned for both his humility and holiness.
One of the most astonishing miracles recorded in the chronicles recounts how, late at night, Marianus was discovered writing by a supernatural light streaming from his own fingers, illuminating the sacred text when candles failed to arrive.
Eventually entrusted with the Church of St. Peter, Blessed Marianus founded an Irish monastery in Regensburg in 1078. From this foundation arose the network of Irish (Scottish) monasteries in southern Germany, many of which would later gain great fame.
Blessed Marianus died in obscurity, as he lived — laboring in silence for the glory of God — leaving behind manuscripts still preserved today, including his annotated Epistles of St. Paul in the Library of Vienna.
