Church leaders in New York are urging the faithful to contact lawmakers in opposition to a measure that would legalize physician-assisted suicide in the state. Cardinal Timothy Dolan, alongside other bishops, has raised concerns over the proposed legislation, which would allow terminally ill adults with a prognosis of six months or less to live to request medication that would hasten their death. Church leaders argue that the measure undermines the principle of "do no harm" and could put vulnerable individuals — such as those with disabilities, the elderly, and those in impoverished or medically underserved communities — at risk of coercion to end their lives so as not to be a "burden." For further insight, Alex Schadenberg, Executive Director of the Euthanasia Prevention Coalition, joins to discuss the implications of the measure, Church leaders' efforts on the matter, and the broader international context, including Canada’s recent election and its impact on assisted suicide legislation.
