Born in Chicago, Illinois, Cardinal Prevost entered the Order of St. Augustine in St. Louis. He earned degrees in mathematics, theology, and a licentiate in canon law. He spent many years as a missionary in Peru, eventually becoming a Peruvian citizen.

He then led the worldwide Augustinian Order from 2001-2013 before becoming a Peruvian bishop from 2015-2023. He now leads the influential Dicastery for Bishops, in charge of selecting bishops.
