The Feast of the Exaltation of the Precious and Life-Giving Cross (September 14) is one of the most solemn celebrations of the Christian Church. It commemorates the discovery of the True Cross by St. Helen, the mother of Emperor Constantine the Great, and its exaltation in Jerusalem by Patriarch Macarius in the year 326.

This holy feast also remembers the miraculous return of the Cross to Jerusalem after it was taken by the Persians, restored under Emperor Heraclius in the 7th century.

The cross—once a symbol of shame—is now the greatest sign of victory, healing, and eternal life in Christ. On this day, the Church lifts up the Cross before the faithful, who bow in worship, proclaiming:
“Lord, have mercy!”
