Even though the Holy Scriptures say little about him, there is much to admire and emulate in St. Joseph. But what is mentioned is enough: his responsibility as protector of the Holy Family; his immediate obedience to God’s instructions; his righteousness in dealing with his wife; and his quiet, trustworthy manliness. This is reason enough to thank the Lord for him and ask him to accompany us throughout our lives!
In this sense, we dedicate to him the most beautiful Gregorian chant in his honour, which is sung at Vespers on his feast day.
May the heavenly hosts extol you, O Joseph,
and may the united chorus of Christians resound in your honour,
you who, ennobled by your merits,
were united in a chaste bond with the glorious Virgin.
When, perplexed, you behold your wife, pregnant with the divine Child,
and doubt fills you with anguish,
an Angel reveals to you that, by the breath of the Heavenly Spirit, the Child has been conceived.
You embrace the newborn Lord,
you follow him on his flight to distant Egypt:
you seek the lost Child and find Him in Jerusalem;
thus mingling sorrows with joys.
For other mortals, bliss awaits after death
and glory welcomes those who have won the palm of victory;
but you, even in this life, delight in God as the blessed do,
and surpass them in joy.
O Sovereign Trinity, grant forgiveness to those who beseech you:
allow us, through the merits of Joseph, to ascend to the heights
and thus be able to sing to you eternally
the hymn of thanksgiving.
Amen.
