Luke 14: 26 - 27

“If any one comes to me without hating his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple. Whoever does not carry his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple.”

Jesus is an amazing teacher who often uses hyperbole to get his message across. Does he want us to hate parents and siblings and ourselves? No, but in telling us to “hate” our family and even our own lives, he's trying to help us understand how radical our love for him needs to be.
