Sentencing arguments have begun in Hong Kong for pro-democracy activist and media mogul Jimmy Lai, marking the final phase before the sentence is handed down. Lai, the 78-year-old founder of the Apple Daily newspaper, was convicted in December 2025 of conspiracy to collude with foreign forces and conspiracy to publish seditious materials under Hong Kong’s National Security Law.
