Before Tim Casey was helping build a 60-acre school on a former horse farm west of Boston, he was a 28-year-old sitting on a struggling school board. Four years later, the school folded. He was 32, had three kids, owned a house, and had a lien placed on his residence for obligations the school couldn't meet. He carried it for three years. And then - because apparently he didn't learn his lesson - he did it again. Twice.
Paul Kolker, Nick Bezner, and Jeff Schiefelbein get the whole story: the charter school experiment that almost worked, the virtues-based curriculum that could say "faith, hope, and love" but had to leave out the rest, and the 60 acres west of Boston where boys climb 20 feet up trees and snowball fights are allowed - as long as nobody aims for the head. Tim also makes the case that real education has to include craftsmanship and entrepreneurship, and that one of the biggest things a school can do is teach boys how to actually have friends.
Plus: Jeff performs "Can't Take My Eyes Off of You" as a praise and worship song. It goes exactly as well as you'd expect.
