Composed in 1879 during the final years of his life, Franz Liszt’s Via Crucis is one of the most profound and unconventional works in the sacred repertoire of the 19th century. Far from the virtuoso brilliance often associated with Liszt’s earlier career, this composition reflects a deeply spiritual and introspective phase of the composer’s life, shaped by his religious devotion and his later minor orders within the Catholic Church.
Via Crucis (“The Way of the Cross”) follows the fourteen Stations of the Cross, meditating musically on Christ’s journey to Calvary. Scored for choir with organ or piano, and occasionally incorporating stark harmonic language and moments of austere simplicity, the work stands apart from the lush Romantic style of its time. Instead, Liszt adopts a restrained, almost ascetic musical language—at times anticipating the harmonic explorations of the 20th century.
The piece alternates between Latin hymns, chorale quotations, and brief dramatic reflections, including settings of Stabat Mater and references to traditional Passion texts. The choral writing is often intimate and contemplative, emphasizing prayer rather than theatrical expression. Silence and harmonic sparseness play a crucial role, reinforcing the spiritual gravity of the Passion narrative.
