"Motets for the Passion" by Goffredo Petrassi is a striking and contemplative work that bridges sacred tradition and modern musical language. Composed in 1934, these motets reflect on the Passion of Christ through a powerful choral setting, blending expressive dissonance with the emotional austerity of early Christian music.
Petrassi, one of the most influential Italian composers of the 20th century, was deeply rooted in the sacred and cultural heritage of Italy. In these motets, he distills the essence of Holy Week — sorrow, silence, and spiritual tension — into a refined and introspective musical form. The text is in Italian, yet the spirit is universal: a cry of humanity before the mystery of suffering and redemption.
Musically, the work departs from Romantic lushness and embraces a lean, polyphonic texture influenced by Renaissance models and Gregorian chant. At the same time, its harmonic language is unmistakably modern, making this cycle a unique contribution to the repertoire of sacred music for Passiontide.
This performance invites reflection, prayer, and deep listening — especially suitable for Holy Week, Good Friday, or personal devotion during Lent.
